The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection will deploy at least 80 teams to monitor markets across the country to prevent illegal hoarding and ensure the availability of essential goods at fair prices during the month of Ramadan.
The government’s quasi-judicial department, responsible for addressing consumer complaints regarding goods and services, took the decision during a meeting on Monday ahead of Ramadan, likely to begin on 2 March.
Ten teams will monitor the markets in the capital Dhaka, two teams in each divisional city and one team in other key districts of the country.
Representatives from different entities, including Aarong, Deshidosh, Ilinion, Apex, Yellow, Sajgoj, Infinity, Super shop Shwapno, Meena Bazar, Agora, UniMart, Daily Shopping and wholesale and retail traders, took part in the meeting, said a press release.
The government body conducted 7,553 drives nationwide and fined 15,713 business establishments from 1 July 2024 to the first week of February 2025. It also realised fines of Tk 10.43 crore.
