A group of Jahangirnagar University students staged demonstration today, demanding ban on the Bangladesh Awami League for committing crimes against humanity during the July Uprising last year.
A procession was brought out around 2:30 pm from the university's central mosque premises and it ended after parading different streets through a short rally in front of the university's main entrance.
Arifuzzaman Uzzal, convener of the JU chapter of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, said, "The students, along with the masses, produced a verdict of banning Awami League on August 5 last year for committing crimes against humanity. If any group wants to rehabilitate the Awami League in any way, then the students and the masses shall produce the same verdict against them."
Touhid Siam, senior co-convener of the Bangladesh Democratic Students' Council, said, "Our countrymen shed their blood without hesitation to overthrow the fascist Sheikh Hasina's regime. We are again prepared to stand against any Awami League rehabilitation efforts."
"The ousted Awami League regime killed around two thousand people including children, innocent civilians, and students and crippled thousands of people. If any vested quarters or any party tries to rehabilitate the Awami League, we shall also fight against them," said Abdur Rashid Jitu, convener of the Mass Uprising Protection Movement.
