Workers of a readymade garment (RMG) factory on Thursday blocked Dhaka-Mymensingh highway for one and a half hours demanding to extend their vacation by two days on the occasion of the holy Eid-ul-Fitr.
The protest caused severe traffic tailback on the both ends of the highway, causing suffering to commuters, reports UNB.
Locals said workers of Utah Knitting & Dyeing Ltd in Gazipur’s Hotapara took to the highway and put a barricade to press home their demand in the morning.
The blockade enforced by the workers continued till 9:30 am beginning at 8 am.
Joydebpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Halim said that normalcy returned to the highway after workers left when the factory authority accepted their demand.
Earlier, the factory authorities announced a 10-day holiday for the workers marking the Eid, but they rejected it demanding to extend it by two more days.
At one stage, the workers staged demonstration and later took to the highway disrupting traffic movement.
