Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam has given a message marking UN Road Safety Week from May 15-21 May.
In his message, Atiqul said, “I am pleased to address you on the occasion of the ‘7th United Nations Global Road Safety Week’, which is being observed under the theme of "Sustainable Transport". Dhaka North City Corporation is committed to promote road safety and creating a more efficient and sustainable travel system for our city.
This year’s theme highlights the need to rethink mobility. Bangladesh is economically raising, so mobility increases in daily life. Road crash that causes injury and death stops the mobility of the affected person and family and impacts productivity and the economy. Evidence suggests that those who die on the road, most of them are children and young adults those can contribute more to the nation, he said.
The DNCC understand the importance of road safety and will create more pedestrian-friendly streets, and provide better infrastructure for public transportation and cycling. We have to move forward to ensure sustainable modes of transportation, such as cycling, walking, and public transportation to reduce congestion, emissions and crushes on our roads. I want to appeal to all citizens to join us in this effort to rethink mobility.
However, we cannot achieve this alone and we need the support and cooperation of all citizens to create a more sustainable and safe transportation system. I urge all citizens to support our efforts by following traffic rules, wearing helmets and seat belts and avoiding reckless driving, respecting the rights of pedestrians and cyclists, and reducing speed in urban areas. Let us work together to create streets that are safe, accessible, and enjoyable for everyone, added the mayor.
