Eid being the largest religious festivals for Muslims brings an opportunity for rich and poor to be equally treated. New clothes and rich foods intensify the festivities of Eid but poor people usually do not afford it.
Imbued with the spirit of equality between the rich and the poor, Bashundhara Group, the largest business conglomerate of the country, like previous years has gifted sharis for female members of the families of the newspaper hawkers.
As per directives of Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan, the authorities of the Bangladesh Pratidin, Kaler Kantho and Daily Sun, the three newspapers of the conglomerate, organise the Eid gift distribution among hawkers every year.
On Monday, Bangladesh Pratidin editor Naem Nizam, Kaler Kantho editor-in-chief Imdadul Haq Milan, and Daily Sun editor Enamul Hoque Chowdhury handed over sharis to leaders of various hawkers’ organisations.
Dhaka Newspaper Hawkers' Multipurpose Cooperative Associations Ltd directors Md Sirajul Haque and Md Delwar Hossain; Newspaper Hawkers Welfare Multipurpose Cooperative Society secretary Md Sahabuddin, director Md Ali Hossain and city supervisor Md Rustum Ali; Patrapatrika Bitarankari Bahumukhi Samabay Samity city supervisor Abdur Rahim Bulu and supervisors Md Arif, Md Nuru Mollah and Md Hossain Mollah received the gifts on behalf of their respective organisations.
Handover of sharis among leaders of various hawkers’ associations took place on the premises of the newspapers’ office at Bashundhara Residential Area in the capital, reports Daily Sun.
Speaking on the occasion, Imdadul Haq Milan said “Hon’ble Chairman and Managing Director of the Bashundhara Group always stand by the newspaper hawkers and other vulnerable people across the country and extend assistance at the time of need. As part of it, we are distributing sharis today.”
About shari distribution, he said “It is not any donation, but Eid gift on behalf of Chairman and Managing Director of the Bashundhara Group. We hope to extend continuous support to hawkers and vice versa.”
He said Bangladesh Pratidin has become the largely circulated newspaper in the country due to impartial journalism, efficiency of editor and sincere effort of the hawkers.
Naem Nizam said “On behalf of Bashundhara Group and East West Media Group Limited, we come forward with Eid gifts every year. Despite small financial value, a gift has great significance to make somebody happy. We produce newspaper and they (hawkers) distribute it. So, the gift is a symbol of teamwork.”
