Paraguay stunned four-time champions Germany 4-3 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw following extra time to reach the FIFA World Cup last 16, reports AP.
Goalkeeper Orlando Gill made two saves in the shootout before José Canale converted the winning sudden-death penalty.
It was the first time Germany had lost a World Cup penalty shootout. Jonathan Tah missed the decisive spot-kick after Manuel Neuer had kept Germany alive by saving Fabián Balbuena's penalty.
Germany also had a goal ruled out in the 102nd minute after a VAR review found Waldemar Anton had fouled Gill before Tah headed home.
Paraguay took the lead in the 42nd minute when Julio Enciso headed in Matías Galarza's cross after a move started by Miguel Almirón.
Germany equalised seven minutes into the second half through Kai Havertz, who turned Florian Wirtz's cross into the net.
Ranked 41st by FIFA before the tournament, Paraguay defended resolutely to secure a famous victory and will face either France or Sweden in Philadelphia on Saturday.
The defeat ended Germany's campaign after another disappointing World Cup, following group-stage exits in the previous two editions.
