The number of bank accounts of individuals and organizations in the country which have more than one crore taka now stands at 1 lakh 13 thousand.
The amount of these accounts is 43.36 per cent of the total deposit of the country’s banking sector.
According to the latest data of the Bangladesh Bank, the country’s banks were holding 14 crore 11 lakh 37 thousand 256 accounts of the depositors till March this year. These accounts had 16 lakhs 13 thousand 626 crore taka unitedly. The number of accounts of more than one crore taka was 1 lakh 10 thousand 192. After three months, 3,362 accounts of millionaires have increased the banks which are 5,097 in one year.
The number of accounts from 1 crore to 5 crore reached 89,772 till June 2023. The cash amount of these accounts was 1 lakh 86 thousand 708 crore taka. Tk 86,631 crore was in the 12,245 accounts of Tk 5-10 crore ranges accounts. Banks have 4,081 accounts of Tk 10-15 crore, 1,865 accounts of Tk 15-20 crore, 1,276 accounts of Tk 20-25 crore, 909 accounts of Tk 25-30 crore, 507 accounts of Tk 30-35 crore, 353 accounts of Tk 35-40 crore, 722 accounts of Tk 40-50 crore and 1,824 accounts of more than Tk 50 crore.
All banks of the country have had 14 crore 59 lakh 73 thousands 192 accounts of the depositors till June 2023. A total of 16 lakh 87 thousand 24 crore taka were deposited in these accounts. Of these, 1 lakh 13 thousand 554 accounts have more than Tk 1 crore deposit. These accounts have had 7 lakh 31 thousand 133 crore taka.
According to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, the bank accounts of millionaires were just five after the Liberation War in 1972. After 3.5 years the number has increased to 47. It stood at 98 in 1980, 943 in 1990, 2,594 in 1996, 5,162 in 2001, 8,887 in 2006, 19,563 in 2008, 93,890 in 2022, and 1 lakh 1,976 millionaire accounts in 2021. The number was 1 lakh 9 thousand 946 in December last year.
