The body of missing Bangladeshi student Shahriar Ahmed Imon has been recovered in Cyprus, while local police have arrested a 22-year-old man in connection with the killing, reports Cyprus Mail.
Authorities said the suspect allegedly demanded ransom from Imon’s family after the murder in an apparent attempt to stage a fake kidnapping.
Imon, son of Nasir Mia of Bakhernagar village in Raipura Upazila of Narsingdi, had been missing since June 12 after leaving the Oroklini area.
According to local media reports, he had told acquaintances that he was heading to his first day of work at a factory in the Kofinou region. On the night of his disappearance, Imon reportedly shared his location with a friend through a mobile application before all communication suddenly stopped.
Police said the suspect confessed during interrogation and provided information about the murder weapon as well as the locations where the victim’s personal belongings had been discarded.
Investigators said Imon and the suspect first met during a bus journey. The suspect allegedly claimed he felt insulted by Imon’s behaviour during the encounter. However, police believe financial motives may also have been behind the crime.
According to the investigation, Imon was lured to the Kofinou area with a promise of employment, where he was allegedly killed and secretly buried.
Authorities further said the suspect later used Imon’s mobile phone to contact his father and demand ransom in an effort to extort money from the family.
The body was recovered in a decomposed state, and preliminary findings indicate that Imon was killed on the same night he went missing.
Forensic experts are examining the scene, while police said the investigation is ongoing.
