The government has proposed giving the highest priority to the education and human resource development sector in the upcoming budget.
A record allocation of Tk1 lakh 36 thousand 606 crore has been proposed for the education sector in the 2026-27 fiscal year budget.
The education sector has been placed as the second-highest priority among 10 major priority sectors in the proposed budget.
Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury unveiled the large allocation and the new education plan in his budget speech in the National Parliament on Thursday.
In his budget speech, the minister said that Tk87 thousand 206 crore was allocated for the education sector in the 2025-26 fiscal year, which was 1.39 percent of GDP.
For the next fiscal year, the allocation has been significantly increased to Tk1 lakh 36 thousand 606 crore, equivalent to 2 percent of GDP.
He also said that the government has set a long-term target to gradually increase education investment to 5 percent of GDP.
