The tax-free income threshold for the 2026-27 fiscal year has been proposed to be increased by Tk 25,000 to Tk 3.75 lakh.
Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury placed the proposal during his budget speech in the Jatiya Sangsad on Thursday.
The existing tax-free income limit stands at Tk3.50 lakh in the current fiscal year. Considering inflation, the limit has been proposed to be raised by Tk25,000, or about 7.14 percent, to Tk3.75 lakh for the 2026-27 fiscal year.
At the same time, a proposal has also been made to set the tax-free income limit at Tk4 lakh for the 2027-28 fiscal year.
For the 2026-27 fiscal year, the tax-free income threshold for female taxpayers and senior citizens aged 65 years and above has been proposed at Tk4.25 lakh.
For third-gender taxpayers and persons with disabilities, the proposed tax-free income limit is Tk5 lakh. In addition, for gazetted war-wounded freedom fighters and gazetted ‘July fighters’, the limit has been proposed at Tk5.25 lakh.
It has also been proposed to retain an additional tax-free benefit of Tk50,000 for each disabled child or dependent of parents or legal guardians of persons with disabilities.
The size of the proposed budget for the new fiscal year has been set at Tk9.38 lakh crore. In the revised budget of the current 2025-26 fiscal year, the expenditure stood at Tk7.88 lakh crore. The revenue collection target has been set at Tk6.95 lakh crore.
In the proposed budget, operating expenditure is estimated at Tk6 lakh 5 thousand and 740 crore, which is significantly higher than the revised budget of the current fiscal year (Tk5 lakh 67 thousand and 538 crore).
To maintain the pace of infrastructure development, total development expenditure, including the Annual Development Programme (ADP), has been set at Tk3 lakh 16 thousand and 75 crore.
