The National Citizens Party (NCP), emerged with leaders who were at the forefront of the July-August movement, officially commenced its political journey. Can this party fulfill the hopes and expectations of the people? NCP's chief organiser for the northern region, Sarjis Alam, spoke with The Daily Kaler Kantho about the upcoming national elections, political alliances, and more. The interview was conducted by Khandaker Asifuzzaman.
Question: Over the past 53-54 years, many political parties have emerged, each offering hope to the people. Why should the people of Bangladesh trust NCP?
Answer: Over the past five decades, we have witnessed the conventional politics of Bangladesh—filled with promises, eloquent speeches, and grand hopes. However, in the end, these promises were never truly fulfilled. We structured our movement based on the pulse of the people, ensuring that every program aligned with their sentiments.
I believe that the young leaders at the forefront of this movement are a tremendous asset to Bangladesh. Unlike other political parties that were formed around one or two prominent figures, our central committee consists of over a hundred highly capable individuals. Within a year, they will emerge as key figures in Bangladesh’s leadership.
These individuals overcame the fear of death during the July Uprising. They faced immense pressure to negotiate during that time but stood firm. Their patriotism inspired millions to take to the streets. Given their leadership in forming this new political party, they have already passed an initial test. We believe they will also succeed in gaining the people's trust in the future.
Question: The national elections are approaching. How is NCP preparing, and will the party participate?
Answer: We emerged as a new political party just two days ago. Our primary focus is to connect with the people we aim to represent. It is crucial to understand what they expect from us, what challenges they have faced, and how they envision a new Bangladesh.
If we truly want to engage in politics for the people, we must first listen to their voices and take their advice on how best to serve the nation. Our team will quickly mobilize to visit every district and sub-district in Bangladesh, directly engaging with the public to shape our action plan based on their needs.
Question: There are rumors that NCP is negotiating with BNP. Are you considering forming an alliance with them?
Answer: We have no current plans to align with or contest elections alongside any specific political party. Our primary goal is to build on our success in bringing down Hasina’s regime across Bangladesh. We believe in our ability to work in all 300 constituencies independently.
Right now, our focus is reaching the people in all 300 seats. Before the election, we need to determine the best strategy for contesting. However, we are confident that this youth-driven movement will find 300 capable candidates to represent us. Even if we fall short in a few areas, that does not mark the end—this is just the beginning of our journey.
As long as we remain honest, patriotic, and committed to justice, we will not only fight in this election but in any election to come.
Question: Thank you for your time.
Answer: Thank you, and my gratitude to Kaler Kantho as well.
