BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman said the main goal of the mass uprising was to return from dictatorship to democracy, multi-party political activities, pluralism and the practice of thought, along with regaining the civil liberties of the people. So, the significance of the 1969 mass uprising in our national life is immense.
The BNP Acting Chairman said this in a message posted on the social media Facebook on Thursday afternoon on the occasion of the historic Mass Uprising Day (January 24).
In the post, Tarique Rahman wrote, “On the occasion of the historic Mass Uprising Day, I pay deep respect to the memory of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives in all democratic movements, including the 1969 mass movement. I pray for the forgiveness of their souls.”
“January 24 is an unforgettable day in our national history. After a long movement and struggle, on this day in 1969, the students and the public built a strong resistance against the then Pakistani colonial rule. The mass movement intensified and turned into a mass uprising. The fall of the military dictator was confirmed. And in the continuation of this, the path to achieving our independence was paved. The main goal of the mass uprising was the return from dictatorship to democracy, multi-party political activities, the practice of pluralism and thought, and the restoration of civil liberties of the people. Hence, the significance of the mass uprising of 1969 in our national life is immense,” Tarique said.
Therefore, on this great day, I call on the countrymen to work together to ensure freedom, sovereignty, democracy, and the fundamental and human rights of the people, he added.
