Those injured in the student uprising against the autocrat Sheikh Hasina and undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital (BSMMU) on Thursday blocked the Shahbagh intersection in the capital demanding better treatment and better quality food in the hospital. Later, Sarjis Alam, one of the coordinators of the anti-discrimination student movement, arrived at the scene and assured them of better treatment, and the protesters returned to the hospital.
The protesters returned to the hospital premises around 7:30 pm on Thursday. Coordinator Sarjis Alam, who is also the general secretary of July Shaheed Smriti Foundation, was staying at the hospital to discuss with the injured till the time of writing the report. The injured in the mass uprising claim that they have been admitted to the hospital for a long time but are not getting better treatment. They are served the same low-quality food every day. This makes them suffer when they come for treatment.
Thay said when they went to meet the hospital director about these things, they were mistreated. As a result, they were forced to take a stand on the road. Earlier, at 6:45 pm, the injured in the mass uprising, who were undergoing treatment at BSMMU, blocked the road from Shahbagh to Farmgate in front of the hospital. This stopped traffic on one side of the road.
Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Khalid told the media that some of the injured in the uprising took up positions in Shahbagh. They were on the road for half an hour. Later, they withdrew the blockade. Now, traffic is normal on both sides of the road.
