Labour Reform Commission Chief Syed Sultan Uddin Ahmed has stated that the commission will make recommendations to improve the living standards of daily contract workers in government, semi-government, and autonomous organizations by eliminating irregularities, mismanagement, and discrimination.
He made these remarks at a view-exchange meeting with representatives of contractual workers from 66 organizations at the Sampriti Meeting Room of Shram Bhaban in Dhaka on Tuesday, reports BSS.
Rafiqul Islam, on behalf of the organizations, submitted a written statement with proposals to the Labour Reform Commission to address the workers' issues.
Commission members Dr Jakir Hossain, Razekuzzaman Ratan, Shakil Akhter Chowdhury, and Taslima Akhter were present at the meeting.
It was mentioned at the meeting that about 650,000 workers are currently working on a daily contract basis in government, semi-government, and autonomous organizations.
Speaking on the occasion, Labour Reform Commission Chief Syed Sultan Uddin Ahmed said the Commission will take effective initiatives to eliminate discrimination so that all daily contract workers can enjoy the benefits and privileges as per the labour law.
"Everyone must work together to build a society free of discrimination," he remarked.
At the meeting, contractual workers stated that although there is a 2018 policy to provide manpower on a daily contract basis, many organizations do not follow it.
Many workers have been working on a daily wage basis for one to 25 years without receiving regular salaries or allowances, they claimed.
They also said that female workers do not receive maternity leave or festival allowances.
They demanded the immediate cancellation of the 2018 policy for providing manpower on a daily contract basis.
