A. F. Hassan Ariff, Lands, Civil Aviation, and Tourism Advisor to the Interim Government, was laid to rest at the Martyrs’ Intellectual Graveyard in Mirpur, Dhaka, on Monday morning. His funeral took place at approximately 10:30 a.m.
The funeral was attended by his family, along with government advisors, officials, and employees. The nation is in mourning following his passing, with the national flag flown at half-mast at all government, semi-government, and autonomous institutions, as well as at public and private buildings, including educational institutions and Bangladesh’s missions abroad.
Special prayers for his soul will be held in mosques across the country on Monday, and other religious institutions have organized prayers for his eternal peace.
Hassan Ariff, aged 83, passed away on Friday afternoon after suffering a heart attack at home. He was on his way to the hospital when he died.
Ariff was appointed as advisor to the interim government on August 8, shortly after Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus took his oath. Prior to this, he served as Attorney General from 2001 to April 2005 and as an advisor to the Ministry of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs, as well as to the Ministry of Land and Religion under Fakhruddin Ahmed's leadership.
Born in 1941 in Kolkata, A. F. Hassan Ariff completed his secondary and higher secondary education at St. Xavier’s College in Kolkata before earning his LLB degree from Calcutta University. He began his legal career at the Calcutta High Court in 1967 before relocating to Dhaka, where he continued to practice at the Bangladesh High Court.
