The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court denied bail to Jasmine Islam, Chairperson of the Hallmark Group, in a corruption case. The court stated that her bail application will be heard after three months and directed the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to submit its investigation report by then.
On Thursday (Nov 28), a 5-member bench of the Appellate Division, led by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, issued the order.
Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kazal represented Jesmine Islam in court, while Advocate Asif Hasan appeared on behalf of the ACC.
Earlier, on August 30, 2022, the High Court had dismissed a rule regarding her bail. The ruling was made by the High Court bench of Justice Md. Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Khizir Hayat.
Challenging that decision, Jesmine Islam filed an appeal in the Appellate Division seeking bail.
According to the information provided by the ACC lawyer, in a case involving the embezzlement of Tk 85 crore 87 lakh 33 thousand 616 from Janata Bank through fake LC, the High Court Division granted bail to Jesmine Islam on March 10, 2019, after issuing a rule.
The ACC then appealed the decision in the Appellate Division.
On June 16 of the same year, the Appellate Division canceled her bail and ordered her to surrender within four weeks.
She subsequently surrendered to the authorities. Later, when she filed a bail petition in the High Court, the court issued a rule.
However, after hearing the case, the High Court dismissed the rule on August 30, 2022
