In a swift overnight operation, members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) apprehended Wasim Uddin, a prime suspect in a long-standing sensitive rape case, in the Keraniganj area early Wednesday.
The operation, carried out by teams from RAB-3 and RAB-10, led to the arrest of the 47-year-old, who had been on the run after relocating from Wari, Dhaka, to avoid authorities.
Wasim, the son of the late Gias Uddin, had previously resided at 65/C Narinda, Shah Saheb Lane, in Wari.
Preliminary investigations reveal that Wasim Uddin first met the victim during the 2018 national elections, where both were involved in election-related activities. The two developed a personal relationship, with Wasim allegedly expressing interest in both a romantic relationship and marriage, despite knowing that the victim was a divorced woman.
According to preliminary investigations, Wasim Uddin initially met the victim during the 2018 national elections, when both were engaged in election-related work. The two subsequently formed a personal relationship, with Wasim reportedly expressing an interest in both a romantic involvement and marriage, even after being informed that the victim was a divorced woman.
Further investigations uncovered that Wasim Uddin exploited the relationship by borrowing significant sums of money from various NGOs, presenting the victim as his wife. When the victim later confronted Wasim's first wife and daughter about the marriage and financial issues, they promised to resolve the matter.
However, Wasim eventually reneged on his promises, refusing to marry the victim or formalize their relationship through registration.
On October 10, 2024, the victim filed an official complaint against Wasim Uddin at the Sabujbagh Police Station in Dhaka. The case was registered under Section 9(1) of the 2000 Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, accusing Wasim of rape under the false promise of marriage.
After the case was filed, Wasim Uddin fled the Wari area and went into hiding in Keraniganj. Legal proceedings are currently underway, and authorities continue their investigations, according to an official media release.
