The 'child preacher' Rafiqul Islam Madani has been acquitted in cases filed under the Digital Security Act in various police stations including Motijheel, Tejgaon, Paltan, and Gazipur's Gacha police station.
On Wednesday, the judge of Dhaka's Cyber Tribunal, Noor E. Alam, acquitted him.
Regarding the matter, the Public Prosecutor of the concerned tribunal, Mohammad Rofiqul Islam, said, “The witnesses could not testify anything significant in the court. Only the investigating officer had presented them as witnesses. In these cases, during the witness hearing phase, the judge acquitted him from the charges.”
Rafiqul Islam Madani was arrested on April 7, 2021, from his home in Netrokona by RAB. The following day, he was handed over to the Gazipur Metropolitan Police by the law enforcement agency. He was then sent to jail under a Digital Security Act case filed at Gacha police station.
Later, three more cases were filed against him under the Digital Security Act in Tejgaon, Motijheel, and Paltan police stations. He was accused of making false statements, threatening and insulting religious sentiments, and spreading defamatory information. He was granted bail by the high court and was released from jail on November 4 of the previous year.
