The interim government on Sunday renamed 14 health facilities, 12 of which were named after members of the Sheikh family during Sheikh Hasina’s 15-year autocratic rule.
The health ministry issued a circular in this regard, signed by the ministry’s Senior Secretary MA Akmal Hossain Azad and ordered by President Mohammed Shahabuddin.
Two capital-based facilities, Sheikh Hasina National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute and Sheikh Russel National Gastroliver Institute and Hospital, were renamed by dropping the first two words denoting names of Sheikh family members.
Among the rest of the facilities, 11 were named after their respective districts while a health sub-centre in Shahasramdhuldia union was named after the union.
Four are based in Gopalganj district, the home of the Sheikh family.
In the district, Sheikh Fazilatunnessa Mujib Eye Hospital and Training Institute in has been renamed as Gopalganj Eye Hospital and Training Institute, Sheikh Lutfar Rahman Dental College Hospital as Gopalganj Dental College Hospital, Sheikh Sayera Khatun Medical College Hospital as Gopalganj Medical College Hospital and Sheikh Sayera Khatun Trauma Center as Gopalganj Trauma Center.
Furthermore, Sirajganj 250 Bed Bongamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib General Hospital has been renamed to Sirajganj 250 Bed General Hospital, Shaheed Sheikh Abu Naser Specialized Hospital in Khulna to Khulna Specialized Hospital, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical College Hospital in Faridpur to Faridpur Medical College and Hospital, Sheikh Hasina Medical College in Tangail to Tangail Medical College Hospital, Colonel Malik Medical College Hospital in Manikganj to Manikganj Medical College Hospital, Sheikh Hasina Medical College Hospital in Jamalpur to Jamalpur Medical College Hospital and M Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital in Dinajpur to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital.
