The body of BNP leader Harris Chowdhury has been exhumed for carrying out DNA tests on the orders of the High Court, reports The Business Standard.
His body was exhumed from the Jamia Khatamun Graveyard of Jamine Khatamun Nabin in Birulia Union in Savar on Wednesday.
After conducting the DNA test, according to Harris Chowdhury's last wish, the body will be buried in Sylhet with proper dignity, according to his family members.
The process of exhuming the body started around 8:30am on Wednesday under strict security at the graveyard in Kamalapur area of Birulia Union of the upazila.
Dhaka District Superintendent of Police (SP) Ahmed Mueed, Executive Magistrate SM Russell Islam Noor and other administration officials were present during the process.
On 5 September the High Court gave the order to exhume his body after holding a hearing on a writ petition of Harris Chowdhury's daughter Barrister Samira Tanjim Chowdhury who sought the DNA test.
In view of that order, Executive Magistrate SM Russell Islam Noor was instructed by the district administration to perform magisterial duties including control of the law and order situation.
His daughter Samira Tanjim confirmed that he died in a hospital in Dhaka on 3 September 2021. He was 68 years old at the time of his death. He was buried in a graveyard near Dhaka.
For quite some time Hariss Chowdhury's cousin Ashiq Chowdhury hinted about discrepancies about Hariris' death through social media status on Facebook but did not say anything directly. Since then, the matter has been in discussion.
However, Hariss Chowdhury's daughter Samira Tanjim Chowdhury clarified the matter. She said that her father died in Dhaka.
Earlier, there were various rumours about the whereabouts of Hariss Chowdhury. Many said that Hariss Chowdhury died in London, but he was at home in Bangladesh. He performed the duty of an Iman in mosques and invited people to the path of Islam on behalf of Tabligh-Jamaat.
