Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed, along with four others, has been sued by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for passport forgery.
The case was filed on Monday. Benazir Ahmed, his wife Jishan Mirza, and their two daughters hold a total of five passports. As these passports contain false information, the ACC has questioned eight officials who were involved in forgery.
Benazir Ahmed served as the IGP from April 15, 2020, to September 30, 2022. Prior to this, he held the positions of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner and Director General of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). Recently, the ACC has been investigating allegations of obtaining illegal assets against him.
So far, the investigation has revealed that Benazir and his family own 12 apartments in Dhaka, 697 bighas of land in various districts, shares in 19 companies, savings certificates worth 30 lakh BDT, 33 bank accounts, and three BO accounts (Beneficiary Owners Accounts for share trading). The court has ordered the concerned authority to seize his assets. However, the former Bangladesh police chief fled the country on May 4, just before the court order was issued.
The news of his passport fraud surfaced amidst reports of his vast assets. According to media reports, despite holding a high position in the police force, Benazir Ahmed obtained passports under the pretense of being a private sector employee, which is a violation of government employment regulations and passport laws.
