Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Mainul Islam said that police will carry out crackdown against muggers, drug traders and extortionists after the ongoing Durga Puja.
Special drives will also be operated to restore traffic management, he said while talking to reporters after visiting Ramkrishna Math and Mission in the capital on Saturday.
“Durga Puja will end through immersion of idols on Sunday. Police have already taken special security measures for the occasion,” said the chief of the police force.
He said, "Durga Puja is being celebrated at over 32,000 mandaps nationwide this year. A total of 215,000 Ansar members have been deployed at the mandaps, while 75,000 policemen, along with the armed forces, are directly ensuring security."
Mainul also assured that the National Emergency Service 999’s control room remains operational round the clock.
“Whenever we are getting any negative information, we are taking action. Since October 1, a total of 43 untoward incidents related to Durga Puja have occurred, and we have promptly responded to each case,” he said.
“So far, 14 cases and 26 general diaries have been filed in connection with the incidents, and law enforcers have arrested 26 individuals,” added the IGP.
