Police on Thursday claimed to have detained six Dhaka University (DU) students for their alleged involvement in the mob beating that led to a man’s death at Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall on Wednesday night.
The detainees are identified as Jalal Ahmed, deputy Science and Technology Affairs Secretary of the Chhatra League DU unit, Mohammad Sumon of the Department of Soil, Water & Environment, Mottakin Sakin of the Institute of Nutrition and Food Science, Al Hossain Sazzad, Ahsan Ullah, and Wajibul Alam.
The DU authorities filed a murder case with Shahbagh Police Station in this connection.
A group of students of the Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall gave a good beating to victim Tofazzal Hossain suspecting him as a thief. As his condition deteriorated, he was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where attending doctors declared him dead.
Tofazzal, a resident of Kathaltali union in Patharghata upazila of Barguna, was mentally challenged and both of his parents have passed away.
Meanwhile, the DU authorities, in a statement, said it is committed to ensuring justice for the victim who died after being beaten by the university students.
Expressing deep shock over the death, the university administration in a press statement said that it shares the same grief and sorrow as everyone feels.
“An inhuman and unexpected death took place at Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall of the university on Wednesday night,” said the statement.
The university authorities, along with the proctorial team, took immediate action and a three-member probe committee has been formed and has already begun collecting information in this regard, it added.
