"If the report on corruption of ex-IGP Benazir Ahmed published on The Daily Kaler Kantho is true, then surely it was a glaring example of discovering the real fact. I’m saying this because there’s a limit of corruption, but what happened here is really a big scam. I never can imagine a government employee can amass such a massive amount of wealth. It’s incredible!"
The retired Justice of the Supreme Court AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury Manik said this to The Daily Kaler Kantho on Monday.
He thinks its necessary to take proper legal action if his allegation of corruption is proved to be true.
This is also necessary to warn others who have the tendency to be involved in such kind of corruption, he added.
Commenting that honest officials will be discouraged from being honest if the allegations are not properly investigated, he said, "The report has mentioned in detail the cases of irregularities and corruption of former IGP Benazir Ahmed. ACC must investigate it after having detailed information about where, when, how much money has been invested. And if the ACC does not investigate, then the High Court has the power to take necessary action. The High Court can compel the ACC to investigate.
However, the ACC itself has formed an investigation committee. If Benazir Ahmed had committed corruption, it would definitely come out in the investigation of the ACC.”
This retired Justice said, "If the ACC finds corruption of Benazir or his relatives, then a case must be filed against him. It should be done in for the betterment of all.
Even for the betterment of police department, this investigation should be done as after the publication of this report, an idea has been created among people that all members of the police are involved in irregularities. But there are many honest and talented police officers who are regularly serving the country and the people.”
Citing the example of the current Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, Justice Manik said, "The younger brother of the current IGP, Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mahmud, lost the parliamentary election despite getting nominated by Awami League. From this it is proved that he did not influence his brother's election despite being the highest police officer at present.”
Commenting on Benazir Ahmed's crime, the retired judge said, "Other police officers will not take responsibility for it. The inquiry should also be in the interest of the government as there is a question of the image of the government.”
He said even if the ACC officials feel any pressure from the influential people, the High Court will take care of it from behind. So there is no way to hide here as the writ has been filed in the High Court. Therefore, the High Court must look into it.
