Police have revealed the name of a man, suspected of involvement in the murder of Assistant Public Prosecutor (APP) Saiful Islam Alif.
The man, identified as Rajib Bhattacharya, is 37 year old. However, Police didn’t disclose detailed information about Rajib.
Kazi Md. Tareq Aziz, Additional Deputy Police Commissioner at Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP), told media that Rajib has been identified by watching the still pictures and motion pictures.
He is suspected of being involved in the attack along with several others, the official added.
The chief advisor’s Facebook page reported that six people have been identified in the Alif murder case through CCTV footage. Rajib is one of them, but the police have not said anything about the remaining five.
On Tuesday, supporters of Sammilita Sanatani Jagran Jote spokesperson Chinmoy Krishna Das attacked on police at the court premises over Das’ arrest and denial of bail. The Assistant Public Prosecutor (APP) Saiful was hacked to death during the clash.
Chief adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus condemned the murder on the night of the incident. He also asked for to investigate into the murder and to take appropriate legal action. At the same time, the Yunus urged the people to remain calm and stay away from participating in unpleasant activities.
He directed law enforcement agencies to reinforce security in all chancy area including the port city. According to a post on his Facebook page, the interim government is committed to ensuring and upholding communal harmony in Bangladesh at any cost.
Kazi Md. Tareq Aziz said: “The police have filed three cases naming 76 International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) members in connection with Tuesday’s violence. The cases have been filed in connection with attacks on police at three places - the court premises, Rangam Cinema Hall, and Kotwali intersection.”
In court premises attack case 49 named and 600-700 unidentified people were made accused while the case over Kotwali intersection incident 13 named and 2500-300 unidentified man were made accused.
In the Rangam Cinema Hall incident, 14 named and 300-400 unnamed people were made accused. The law enforcement agencies arrested 33 people so far.
Meanwhile, the District Bar Association is holding a strike at the Chittagong court in protest against the murder of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif.
