Awami League nominated mayoral candidate Talukder Abdul Khaleque elected mayor in Khulna City Corporation (KCC) elections, defeating his nearest candidate Islami Andolon Bangladesh's Maulana Abdul Awal.
Abdul Khaleque beat Abdul Awal by a big margin of 94,761 votes as the former mayor bagged 154,825 votes while the latter 60,064 in total 289 centres.
Five candidates contested for the mayoral post, 136 for councillors 31 general wards, and 39 for 10 reserved seats.
Talukder Abdul Khaleque from Awami League, Shafiqul Islam from Janiya party, Abdul Awal from Islami Andolon Bangladesh, SM Sabbir Hossain from Jaker Party, and SM Shafiqur Rahman Independent contested for the mayoral post.
