Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) detained a youth and seized 17 gold bars weighing 2.829kg at the Benapole frontier of Jashore on Saturday.
The detainee is Mikhail Hossain Pintu, 30, son of Abu Sayeed of Baraputa village under Benapole Port police station.
Jashore BGB-49 Battalion Commander Lt. Col. Ahmed Jamil Hossain said, acting on a tip-off that a group of smugglers will smuggle gold bars to India through Khalsi field near Benapole port, BGB personnel detained Mikhail Hossain Pintu in suspicion and seized 17 gold bars from his possession.
Jashore BGB-49 and Moheshpur BGB-58 jointly conducted the drive, he added.
Jamil Hossain said the estimated market value of the seized gold is around Tk 2.83 crore.
A case was filed and the detainee was handed over to the police, added the official.
