Police detained BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's special assistant Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas from the party’s Naya Paltan central office on Wednesday afternoon.
He was detained by law-enforcement agencies during the clash between BNP activists and the police.
Meanwhile, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir reached the party’s Naya Paltan office after hearing the news of the clash.
Police and BNP activists locked into a clash in front of BNP’s Naya Paltan central office in the afternoon amid tension over BNP’s December 10 rally.
Eyewitnesses said when BNP leaders and activists took a position in front of the party office around 3 pm and started chanting slogans police asked them to leave the place.
At one stage of altercation over the issue, police lobbed tear gas shells and charged batons to disperse them.
