Two gold smugglers were detained with 30 gold bars weighing around 10 kg from the Jamtala area on the Navaran-Satkhira highway in Jashore on Thursday night, police said.
One smuggler was killed during the gunfight between the law enforcers and the gold smugglers.
Jashore Navaran Circle Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Jewel Imran said, acting on a tip-off, a joint team of Jashore Detective Branch (DB) and Sharsha Police Station conducted a drive on Navaran-Satkhira highway around 1 am and detained two smugglers with 30 gold bars.
Later, 50-60 men came to the spot to snatch away the detainees and gold by blasting a bomb and firing. Police also fired in retaliation leaving one smuggler dead on the spot, he added.
The worth of the seized gold is around Tk 7 crore.
Detainees were handed over to Sharsha police, added the police official.
