Russian forces launched a series of strikes on Ukrainian energy sites on Friday, targeting gas and energy infrastructure critical to Ukraine’s military-industrial complex, according to the Russian Defense Ministry. The attack involved long-range missiles and drones, reports RT.
Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko confirmed on Facebook that multiple regions in Ukraine were hit by massive missile and drone strikes, damaging key energy and gas infrastructure. He assured that authorities were taking necessary measures to stabilize energy and gas supply across the country.
Naftogaz, Ukraine’s national gas and oil company, stated that several gas-extracting facilities had been damaged. Power outages were reported in various areas, including the northern Chernigov Region and the western Ternopol and Ivano-Frankovsk regions, following strikes on critical industrial sites.
In the eastern Poltava Region, local authorities reported that fragments of an enemy projectile fell on a house, injuring three people.
The escalation of attacks on energy infrastructure began after Ukrainian forces bombed the long bridge linking Crimea to mainland Russia in October 2022. In April 2024, President Vladimir Putin reiterated that the strikes were retaliatory measures in response to Ukrainian attacks on Russian soil. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov further clarified that the latest strikes were aimed at facilities connected to weapons production in Ukraine.
