Chinese scientists are developing a machine gun capable of firing bullets at an unprecedented rate—potentially the fastest in history. The weapon, which is described as a "metal storm," consists of five or more barrels, each capable of firing 450,000 rounds per minute. The resulting barrage has an extraordinary density, allowing it to intercept hypersonic missiles traveling at speeds exceeding Mach 7. In comparison, the U.S. military's Phalanx system, one of the most powerful in the world, fires only 4,500 rounds per minute, reports South China Morning Post.
A major challenge for such a weapon is refilling the ammunition at a rate that matches its extreme firepower. Chinese researchers have developed an innovative solution: a container-like, replaceable magazine with barrels pre-loaded with bullets. Once the bullets are fired, the entire container—including the spent barrels—is discarded. This box-type rotary firing technology enhances loading speed, reduces barrel wear, and enables rapid, continuous strikes.
To meet the high demand for shots—7,500 per second—the researchers also developed a contactless electronic trigger using coils. This system can fire in just 17.5 microseconds, igniting the explosive with remarkable efficiency.
This weapon, inspired by the Australian "Metal Storm" concept proposed in the 1990s, could potentially surpass Western prototypes by a factor of ten in firing rate. China's ongoing investment and innovation in this technology suggest it could become a key military asset, crucial for defending territorial waters and airspace in future conflicts.
