A new survey reveals that nearly 80% of Americans suspect the U.S. government is withholding information about a surge in mysterious drone sightings over the past month, with half viewing them as a threat.
The CBS News/YouGov poll, conducted from December 18-20 with 2,244 U.S. adults, found that 53% of respondents consider the drones a threat, while 78% believe the government is concealing what it knows. Over half of the population is closely following the story, and those more engaged are increasingly suspicious of government involvement.
The wave of drone sightings, which began in mid-November in New Jersey, has since spread across the country, from the East Coast to the Pacific. Despite media attention and investigations by multiple federal agencies—including the FBI, Department of Homeland Security (DHS), FAA, and Department of Defense (DoD)—no significant threats have been confirmed. The government has attributed many sightings to commercial or hobbyist drones, law enforcement operations, or misidentified objects like stars.
Despite reassurances from the Pentagon regarding military drone incursions, public skepticism remains high, with calls for greater transparency. President-elect Donald Trump even suggested that any unidentified drones should be shot down, questioning whether such incidents could occur without government knowledge.
