Saudi Arabia has strongly condemned Israel's decision to seize Syrian-held areas in a United Nations-patrolled buffer zone within the Golan Heights, labeling it a blatant violation of international law. The criticism comes amid heightened regional tensions following the recent ousting of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
On Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced his directive to the Israeli army to "seize" the demilitarized zone in the Syrian-controlled part of the Golan Heights. This buffer zone, established under UN supervision, has long been a contentious area, representing a fragile boundary between the two nations.
In response, Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Monday, condemning Israel's actions as a deliberate attempt to undermine Syria's sovereignty and territorial unity. "The move shows Israel’s determination to sabotage Syria’s chances of restoring its security, stability, and territorial integrity," the statement read.
The Kingdom called on the global community to denounce these actions and reaffirm its commitment to Syria’s sovereignty. "Saudi Arabia stresses the need for the international community to condemn these Israeli violations, affirm respect for Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and confirm that the Golan Heights are occupied Syrian Arab land," the statement emphasized.
The Golan Heights, a strategically significant plateau, has been under Israeli occupation since the Six-Day War in 1967. Although annexed by Israel in 1981, this move has not been internationally recognized, with the UN continuing to view the territory as Syrian land.
The timing of Israel’s move, following the regime change in Syria, has raised concerns about the potential for further instability in the region. Analysts note that the seizure of the buffer zone could provoke heightened tensions and complicate efforts to restore peace in Syria after years of conflict.
Saudi Arabia’s call for a united international response underscores its commitment to supporting Syrian sovereignty and opposing unilateral actions that threaten regional stability.
