Rishi Sunak will officially become prime minister of the United Kingdom Tuesday morning after winning the Conservative Party leadership contest
Rishi Sunak was Monday elected Conservative leader and will become the next prime minister, after rival Penny Mordaunt failed to secure the necessary 100 nominations from her fellow MPs.
"Rishi Sunak is therefore elected as leader of the Conservative Party," senior backbencher Graham Brady said, as Mordaunt vowed her "full support" for the former finance minister.
Sunak is poised to become the UK's youngest prime minister for more than 200 years.
At 42, he is the same age Earl of Liverpool Robert Banks Jenkinson was when he came to office in 1812. Since then, David Cameron, who was elected at the age of 43 in 2010, has held the record as the youngest prime minister.
