The Economic Census 2024, a crucial initiative for Bangladesh’s economic development and strategic planning, is set to begin nationwide on 10 December.
The census will run for 15 days, concluding on 26 December. This year’s census will include detailed data on foreign personnel working in the country.
The announcement was made at a workshop organised by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) in Agargaon on Thursday, where the final preparations for the census were discussed.
In his address as the chief guest, Md Mahbub Hossain, Secretary of the Statistics and Informatics Division, emphasised that the economic census is conducted once every decade. He expressed confidence that, with collective efforts, the process would be executed smoothly and successfully.
Hossain also highlighted ongoing efforts to raise awareness about the census and to facilitate data collection through training and awareness campaigns.
These initiatives are expected to contribute to the effective implementation of the census.
Project Director SM Shakil Akhter, a special guest at the workshop, mentioned that the government has established specific rules for the project, which must be adhered to for successful execution. He noted that a team of 95,000 enumerators will be deployed to collect data across the country, and no changes to the enumerators can be made once the process begins.
Further preparations for the census include training for divisional and district coordinators, as well as zonal officers at the sub-district and police station levels. Data collection will be carried out using modern technology, including tablets, with ongoing monitoring to ensure accuracy.
Mohammad Obaidul Islam, Deputy Director General of BBS, emphasised the importance of the economic census in presenting an accurate picture of the country's economic landscape. The data collected will be crucial for future policy-making and planning.
The workshop was chaired by Mohammed Mizanur Rahman, Director General (Additional Secretary) of BBS.
The Economic Census, which is conducted every ten years, will provide key indicators for economic analysis and planning. This year’s census follows previous rounds in 1986, 2001, 2003, and 2013, marking the 4th such exercise in Bangladesh.
