The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Uttara East Police Station, Md. Mohibullah, has been closed after the escape of former OC Shah Alam from police custody. Shah Alam was arrested in connection with a murder case related to the anti-discrimination movement and was being held at the station at the time of the escape.
The suspension of OC Mohibullah was confirmed by Muhammad Talebur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner of Media and Public Relations for Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), on Friday evening. Following the suspension, Mohibullah was reassigned to the police headquarters.
Shah Alam, arrested from Kushtia on Wednesday for his role in the student killings during the anti-discrimination protests, managed to escape from Uttara East Police Station on Thursday afternoon. ASI Sajjad, who was on duty at the time, has also been suspended for negligence.
Earlier, OC Mohibullah had stated that Shah Alam fled while preparations were underway to transfer him to court. Shah Alam had served as OC of Uttara East Police Station since August 1, during the anti-discrimination student protests. He was later implicated in a murder case stemming from the deaths of students during the unrest, which led to a case filed on September 2.
DMP spokesperson Talebur Rahman had previously revealed that Shah Alam was facing several charges, including murder, related to the anti-discrimination movement. After his arrest on Wednesday, efforts were underway to present him in court when the escape occurred. As a result, an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) on duty during the incident has been suspended for dereliction of duty.
