A red alert has been issued across the country for the arrest of former Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shah Alam, who escaped from the Uttara East Police Station in the capital.
Shah Alam, who had been detained in connection with the anti-discrimination student movement, was in the process of being handed over to the court on Thursday afternoon when he managed to flee. Following the escape, a nationwide alert was triggered to apprehend him.
Uttara Division Deputy Commissioner of Police (DC) Raunak Jahan confirmed the escape on Friday afternoon, stating that all necessary measures, including the red alert issued by the police headquarters, have been implemented to locate and capture Shah Alam. The police have also filed a case regarding the escape incident.
Deputy Police Commissioner (DC) Muhammad Talebur Rahman of the DMP Media and Public Relations Department explained that Shah Alam had been implicated in several cases, including a murder charge linked to the anti-discrimination student movement on August 5. He had joined the Uttara East Police Station on August 1, and a murder case was filed against him on September 2 related to the movement.
Shah Alam was arrested on Wednesday in connection with this case, and the process to transfer him to court was underway on Thursday when he escaped. In response to the escape, an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) on duty has been suspended for negligence.
Uttara East Police Station OC Md. Mohibullah stated that the police, along with units from the army and RAB, are actively working to capture the fugitive. He also confirmed that IT support is also being utilized in the search efforts, and authorities remain hopeful of making an arrest soon.
