The district administration seized 5,000 meters of illegal fishing nets from various areas in Raozan Upazila, including Madarsha and Ghordhura near the Halda River, during an overnight drive that concluded early Wednesday, BSS reports.
The mobile court, led by Executive Magistrate and Hathazari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) A B M Moshiuzaman, conducted the operation with the support of police, fisheries officials, and members of the Integrated Development Foundation (IDF). The five-hour-long drive, which began at 12:30 AM, resulted in the confiscation of the illegal nets.
UNO Moshiuzaman told BSS that the authorities will continue regular drives to protect the Halda River, the only natural breeding ground for carp in Bangladesh and a critical habitat for the mother fish of the Bangabandhu Fisheries Heritage, as well as its dolphins and overall biodiversity.
He also urged the public to cooperate by providing accurate information to assist the ongoing efforts.
