Lionel Messi missed Inter Miami’s CONCACAF Champions Cup Round of 16 match against Jamaican club Cavalier FC on Thursday night, marking his second consecutive absence after sitting out Sunday’s MLS fixture against Houston.
Despite training with the team on Tuesday and Wednesday, the 37-year-old forward was left out of the squad for the first leg of the home-and-home series. Coach Javier Mascherano confirmed Wednesday that Messi was not dealing with an injury and said his availability was the same as any other active player.
Inter Miami is navigating a demanding schedule, with four matches in 11 days. After Thursday’s clash, the club returns to MLS action against Charlotte on Sunday before traveling to Kingston, Jamaica, for the second leg against Cavalier on March 13.
