Bangladesh’s veteran cricketer Mushfiqur Rahim announced his retirement from ODI cricket on Wednesday (March 5) night.
He announced his retirement on his social media platforms.
“I am announcing my retirement from the ODI format as of today,” Mushfiq wrote in his social media post.
“Alhamdulillah for everything. While our achievements may have been limited on a global level, one thing is certain: whenever I stepped onto the field for my country, I gave more than 100% with dedication and honesty,” it added.
“The last few weeks have been very challenging for me, and I have come to realize that this is my destiny. Allah says in the Quran: “Wa tu’izzu man tasha’ wa tu’zhilu man tasha’” - “And He honours whom He wills, and He disgraces whom He wills.” (3:26).”
There had been a lot of discussions regarding the senior duo’s - Mushfiq and Mahmudullah - retirement from the 50-over cricket after their disappointing performances in the ongoing Champions Trophy.
On Wednesday, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Faruque Ahmed said during an interview that the call has to come from the senior cricketers regarding their future, and Mushfiq obliged.
Mushfiq made his ODI debut against Zimababwe in August, 2006.
He played 274 matches for Bangladesh where he scored 7,795 runs at an average of 36.42 including nine centuries with a career-best of 144. As a wicketkeeper, he had 243 catches and 56 stumpings behind the stumps.
