Umpire Gazi Sohel fell ill shortly after the toss of a Dhaka Premier League (DPL) match between Mohammedan Sporting Club and Agrani Bank on Wednesday (April 9), prompting immediate medical attention and a brief stay at the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishtan (BKSP) medical centre.
According to sources at the ground, Sohel began to feel unwell after conducting the toss. He reportedly tried to rest but complained of dizziness. Match referee Debabrata Paul subsequently advised that he be transported by ambulance to the on-site medical facility.
"He told us he didn’t get enough sleep last night, which may have caused his body to weaken," said Dr Samir Ullah of the BKSP medical centre. “His blood pressure is normal, but his heart rate was elevated. He’s now resting and has been under observation for about half an hour. If all goes well, we’ll release him shortly.”
With Gazi Sohel unable to officiate, fourth umpire Sharafuddin Ahmed stepped in to partner Habibur Rahman for the match.
This incident comes just days after veteran cricketer Tamim Iqbal was hospitalised following a health scare during another DPL game at the same venue.
