Lionel Messi has been fined by Major League Soccer (MLS) for breaching league rules prohibiting physical contact with an opponent’s face, head, or neck, BBC reported.
The MLS Disciplinary Committee sanctioned the 37-year-old Inter Miami forward following an incident during his team’s 2-2 draw against New York City FC on February 22.
The exact amount of the fine has not been disclosed.
Messi was seen approaching a member of the opposition’s coaching staff after the match and placing his hand on the back of their neck, leading to disciplinary action.
His teammate Luis Suárez was also penalized for a separate incident.
The Uruguayan striker received a fine for pinching the back of New York City FC defender Birk Risa’s neck during a confrontation at halftime.
Both players remain available for selection as Inter Miami continues its MLS campaign.
