Australia’s woes ahead of the Champions Trophy seem never-ending. It was already confirmed that Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins would not be part of the squad. Mitchell Marsh’s injury has also ruled him out of the tournament. The team was relying on Marcus Stoinis, but he has unexpectedly announced his retirement. Now, Mitchell Starc has also withdrawn from the Champions Trophy.
One of the best pacers of this era, Starc has pulled out of the ICC Champions Trophy, which will be held in Pakistan. The Australian fast bowler has cited personal reasons for withdrawing from the squad. As a result, the famous Australian pace trio—Starc, Cummins, and Hazlewood—will all be absent from the tournament.
Cricket Australia has been forced to make changes to its squad at the last moment. With Cummins out, Steven Smith will take over as captain. Five new players have been included in the squad: Sean Abbott, Ben Dwarshuis, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Spencer Johnson, and Tanveer Sangha.
The exact reason behind Starc’s withdrawal remains unknown. According to ESPN Cricinfo, the Australian pacer requested privacy regarding his decision, and Cricket Australia has respected his wishes. However, Starc was seen feeling some discomfort while bowling in the second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle.
Australia’s chief selector, George Bailey, confirmed Starc’s decision, saying, “We understand and respect Mitch’s decision. He has always been deeply committed to representing Australia at the highest level.”
“His ability to play through pain and adversity is well known. At the same time, his willingness to prioritize his country over other career opportunities is commendable. His absence is undoubtedly a big setback for our Champions Trophy campaign, but it also creates opportunities for others to prove themselves in the tournament.”
