Housing and Public Works Minister Zakaria Taher Sumon has said that the current government inherited a fragile economy.
He said that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is working 18–19 hours a day, adding that the government is only three months into its tenure.
“You know that there is no money in our banks. The Awami League has taken around Tk 600,000 crore from the banks. Whose money is this? This is your money. You should pray for him so that, as he continues to move the country forward, Allah may grant us success,” he said.
He made the remarks as the chief guest at a day-long free medical camp organized by the AKM Abu Taher Foundation at Jhalam School and College field in Barura on Saturday (May 30), marking the 45th martyrdom anniversary of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman.
At the camp, around 5,000 people from four unions in different areas received free medical services. More than a hundred specialist doctors from across the country provided health check-ups, consultations, and distributed necessary medicines.
A large number of men, women, and children were seen from early morning receiving healthcare services. Organizers said the initiative was aimed at providing treatment to underprivileged and underserved people.
AKM Abu Taher Foundation life member Moazzem Hossain Kallol said nearly 5,000 people received services at the free medical camp. Medicines were distributed free of cost. Patients requiring surgery will also receive free treatment. Circumcision services will continue for seven days from Saturday.
He added that such services will be provided continuously across Barura municipality and 16 unions.
