A joint force operation is underway in Jungle Salimpur of Chattogram after unidentified armed criminals allegedly opened fire on a recently established Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) camp in the early hours of Monday, reports Daily Sun.
According to officials, the attack took place at around 2:00am. Members of the camp reportedly returned fire in self-defence during the incident. Between 10 and 12 members of the RAB and police were injured.
Following the attack, a large contingent of personnel from the RAB and police launched a joint operation in the area at around 3:00am.
The development was confirmed by Lieutenant Colonel Hafizur Rahman, commander of RAB-7 Chattogram.
He said that shortly after 1:00am, armed criminals opened fire on the newly established RAB camp in Jungle Salimpur.
“As a result, 10 to 12 members of the RAB and police were injured. Several individuals have been detained in connection with the incident,” he said.
The RAB commander alleged that Yasin and members of his armed group operating in Jungle Salimpur were involved in the attack.
Security forces have since cordoned off the area from all sides as part of the ongoing operation. According to the latest information, the drive was still in progress at the time of reporting. Authorities said further details would be disclosed once the operation concludes.
Recently, the Home Minister informed Parliament that Jungle Salimpur, long regarded as a haven for criminal groups, had been brought under full control. The government also announced plans to establish two police training centres in the area.
The Inspector General of Police is scheduled to visit the area on 30 May.
