A nearly 13-kilometre-long traffic congestion has formed on the Gazaria, Munshiganj area of the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway, causing severe suffering to passengers and drivers.
The congestion began around 4:00 am on Sunday (May 24) and worsened as the day progressed.
According to sources, the tailback stretched across the Cumilla-bound lane in the Gazaria section of the highway. Goods-laden trucks, long-route buses and private vehicles remained stranded at different points for hours.
Truck driver Shamim Mia said he was heading to Chattogram but had been stuck in traffic near the Jamaldi bus stand area for around an hour.
“I am feeling sleepy and helpless. I heard the traffic jam was caused by an accident in Daudkandi,” he said.
Bus driver Shahid said he had been trapped in the congestion since the Baluakandi area and was uncertain when he would reach his destination.
A bus passenger expressed frustration, saying traffic congestion frequently occurs on the highway, making it difficult to reach destinations on time.
Gazaria Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shah Kamal Akand said the traffic jam was triggered by a road accident in Daudkandi of Cumilla.
He said efforts were underway to bring the situation under control and expressed hope that traffic movement would return to normal soon.
