The government has taken multi-dimensional initiatives to develop space, satellite and drone technology in Bangladesh, said Fakir Mahbub Anam, the minister of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology and the Ministry of Science and Technology.
He said that in this era of technology-driven development, satellite, drone and space technology are not just luxuries, but are working as essential infrastructure in the national development, disaster management, agriculture, fisheries, communication and security sectors.
He said this while speaking as the chief guest at a seminar titled ‘Satellite, Drones and Future Space Technology in Bangladesh’ held at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) building in the capital on Monday.
This information was revealed in a press release signed by Muhammad Jasim Uddin, public relations officer of the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology.
The minister said, “Satellite technology will enable disaster forecasting, river erosion monitoring, increase agricultural production, coastal security and ensure the safety of fishermen in the deep sea. The government has already taken steps to quickly deliver cyclone and adverse weather forecasts to fishermen.”
Regarding drone technology, he said, “Drones are no longer just a photography or entertainment device; they are being used as an effective technological platform for border security, agricultural management, survey activities and disaster management.”
The minister said that the government is working on plans to deploy new satellites based on Low Earth Orbit (LEO) in the future, so that more clear and effective information can be collected. At the same time, he called for effective initiatives to use space data and applications in collaboration with universities, research institutions and technology sector stakeholders.
Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited (BSCL) managing director and CEO Dr. Imadur Rahman was present as the keynote speaker at the event. IEB President and Rajdhani Unnayan Kartipakkha (RAJUK) chairman engineer Riazul Islam and IEB convener and former Member of Parliament Shahrin Islam Chowdhury Tuhin were present as special guests.
The organizers of the seminar and experts from the relevant sectors were present. The speakers emphasized the potential of Bangladesh's space technology, artificial intelligence-based data analysis, and the involvement of young engineers in technological innovation.
