Railway adviser Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan identified corruption and waste as the major reasons behind railway’s loss.
“It costs two and a half taka to earn one taka,” he said adding that they are working to reduce corruption and stop waste.
The adviser made the statement on Wednesday at the inauguration ceremony of a new pair of commuter trains on Dhaka-Bhairab Bazar-Dhaka route in front of the VIP lounge of Dhaka Railway Station.
He said that the interim government is focused on sub-cities of country’s major cities including Dhaka. Hence, we try to understand the needs of sub-cities’ dwellers and to meet them.
Mentioning that many people travels by rail without ticket, Fouzul Kabir said: “Although the railway is a cost-effective means of travel, many don’t pay the fare.”
“If it continues, the railway service will be stopped.”
He called on everyone to come forward and to help railway to collect the fare, he said: “If you see anyone not paying the fare, bring them to our attention.”
“If the railways’ losses increase further, we will have no option but to reduce rail services to cope with it.”
