Holidays have been declared in 10 factories in Tongi and Mouchak areas of Kaliakoir in Gazipur amid the workers' protest movement.
Gazipur Industrial Police-2 superintendent of police AKM Jahirul Islam confirmed this information to the media at around 12:15 pm on Tuesday.
He said that so far, 10 factories in Tongi and Gazipur have been declared holiday. It is also believed that this number may increase further.
Earlier, workers blocked the highway in the Tongi area of the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway since morning demanding arrears of salaries. Similar incidents occurred in some other places, resulting in chaos on the highway. The workers claimed that they had arrears of two months' salary, which was supposed to be paid. But they were forced to block the road when the factory authorities did not pay the salaries, they said.
Gazipur Industrial Police-2 inspector Ismail Hossain told the media that the blockade has been withdrawn and traffic is now normal.
