Illegal drug-dealing mafias remain elusive, with some operating in secret while others continue their business openly. Questions are being raised regarding the arrest of only 12 out of the 83 godfathers listed by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DNC). Concerns are growing as many of these drug lords are disguised as professionals in various sectors, and some are not even included in the list due to their connections with influential individuals.
Brigadier General Imrul Hasan, the Regional Commander of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Cox’s Bazar, spoke to Bangladesh Pratidin, stating, "Our strict vigilance continues at the border, and locals are aware of it. Specifically, there is a BGB battalion stationed to prevent the entry of drugs and the movement of Rohingyas. This battalion will soon be inaugurated."
According to DNC sources, of the 83 godfathers on the list, 12 were arrested by yesterday as part of a special operation that began on September 4. Additionally, 174 individuals were arrested from a secondary list of 1,185 suspects.
It has come to light that after August 5, many of these drug lords have changed their tactics to avoid surveillance. Local political influencers have reportedly been assisting in securing the operations at the border. On October 15, Ashraf Ali, a leader of a political organization, was arrested by RAB in Teknaf with 3,200 yaba pills.
DNC Director (Investigation and Operations) Tanveer Mumtaz stated, "We have deployed skilled officers in phases in Cox’s Bazar and other border areas. The operation is ongoing to apprehend the traders on the list, and we are experiencing some successes."
